The Mazda 6

Midsize sedans can often be quite interchangeable, but the Mazda 6 stands out because of its charisma. It is one of the best Mazda cars in its class because of its handling, giving it the fun factor.

The current generation of the Mazda 6 came out in 2009. It is powered by one two different engines: a 170 horsepower four-cylinder and a 272 horsepower V6. It comes available in one of seven different models, offering everything from a basic set up to all the bells and whistles including blue tooth and xenon headlights.

The Mazda 6 has a sports car inspired appearance, but has been upgraded in size to accommodate a full family with room to spare. While high in performance for its class, it also offers a comfortable ride.

On the downside, the gas mileage on the Mazda 6 is the inevitable double edged sword of its high performance. The material science of the car is a bit hit and miss, featuring materials that are soft to the touch in some areas and basic plastic in others. In addition to this, the newer Mazda 6s are not quite as sporty as their predecessors. This is the result of increasing the interior and cargo space of the car.

The first generation of Mazda 6s showed up in 2003. It was available only as a sedan. The engines lagged behind the newer models in horsepower, but still offered excellent handling. Even the basic models offered power accessories, cruise control, and cloth upholstery. By 2004 the line was upgraded to include four door hatchbacks and wagons. The Mazdaspeed 6 was an all wheel drive variant that was made available only in 2006 and 2007, with a powerful 278 horsepower V6 under the hood.

The downside of the first generation of Mazda 6 was the relatively small amount of passenger room, and a lower quality interior. Its V6 was not quite up to par, except in the Mazdaspeed 6, but it offered something quite a bit more sporty than most mid size sedans did.
